Updates from Shanghai
As anticipated in March issue 219, two works by Giorgio Morandi (Flowers, oil on canvas, 1940 and Flowers, oil on canvas, 1962), belonging to the Rimoldi Collection, have traveled to the "Paris of the East" to be exhibited from June 17th until the end of October 2026 at the Pudong Museum of Art in Shanghai. The exhibition, titled "Giorgio Morandi. Solo," is the first major monographic exhibition dedicated to Morandi and the largest and most prestigious retrospective ever dedicated to the artist outside of Italy. Curators Lorenzo Balbi (Director of MAMbo and the Morandi Museum) and Francesco D'Arelli (Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing) have designed an exhibition itinerary divided into 35 sections where visitors can explore the most important themes of the Bolognese artist's work (portraits, still lifes, flowers, landscapes). The selection of over 140 works, including the two oils from the Rimoldi Museum, comes from prestigious museums and other institutions, including the Morandi Museum in Bologna, the Uffizi Galleries, the Roberto Longhi Foundation for the Studies of Art History, the Chamber of Deputies, the Magnani-Rocca Foundation, the GAM in Turin, the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, and the Museo del Novecento in Milan. Making the experience even more special are some original objects from Casa Morandi, 57 photographs by Gianni Berengo Gardin, two films by Tacita Dean from 2009, and the exclusive documentary "Morandi Solo" by director Germano Maccioni, made especially for the occasion.
