View of the Dolomite Mountains

During the 19th century, the traditional "Journey to Italy" of English enthusiasts slowly moved towards the chain of the Alps and the Dolomites, becoming a favorite destination especially for a host of travelers made up of scientists, writers and painters. H.E. Thrupp, author or female author (it is not known) of the watercolors, is among these English tourists traveling in the Dolomites, who loves to portray the views that appear before his eyes and which become a souvenir to take back home.

Thrupp's trip to the Dolomites takes place between May and June 1908: at the end of May he finds himself at the foot of the Latemar and in early June he reaches the Ampezzo Valley. Thrupp with his watercolors thus testifies a "tour" to discover these splendid mountains common among the British Victorians.
